Tvorba

Prague design store

Tvorba is not your average Prague design shop. This recently opened, beautifully curated space nestled in the heart of Prague 7’s Art District is part shop, part community space. The selection found in this open and airy showroom is an eclectic mix of clothes, jewelry, bags, porcelain and other design pieces which have all been made by local designers from various parts of the Czech Republic. In fact, Tvorba is most likely Prague’s first design shop bringing together non-Prague artists and designers, making it an ideal stop when hunting for an original, Czech handcrafted souvenir. One has the feeling of being in an art gallery rather than a store as each designer’s story is presented alongside their products. It makes the shopping experience much more personal when we can learn about the designer and what it takes to make their handcrafted items. Also, don’t miss out on their monthly pop-up shelf, where they’ll be rotating the work of various designers.

Tvorba is much more than a design shop though. The friendly owners, who have their own workshop in the back, have constructed the space with the help of local architects so that it can be opened up and adapted for events such as workshops from featured designers or, for example, lectures on 1920s Czechoslovakian fashion.

I chatted with Marie, one of Tvorba’s owners, who told me that the aim of Tvorba is quite similar to Krásná jizba, a collective of fashion designers and artists of modern design who from 1922 to 1957 sold Czech design and fashion to the public for reasonable prices. Tvorba would like to pick up where this tradition left off by making Czech design accessible to all. At Tvorba there is something in everyone’s price range. If you’re looking for an original, locally-made Czech souvenir or just a new piece to add to your wardrobe, stop by Tvorba.
